Letter to the Community - Summer 2010

Friends,

Over the last three years, the Go Center has been a wonderful group of people, and a gathering place. Thank you all for making it the friendly, enjoyable place it is.

The center has been primarily supported by myself, with the help of a small number of others. The center now needs your help. We need to expand the circle of those who care for the center, keep it running, and cover it’s costs.

Costs

BamBam and I have always personally paid for monthly fee on the region Vineland. We divided up the land in a way that we hoped would allow for the Go Center to be self sustaining: The Go Center takes up about 1/3 of the region, and the remainder is divided into 10 “shares” with a small monthly fee (US$35). In exchange for helping pay for the Go Center, shareholders get a nice parcel of land.

For most of the last two years, we’ve only had one share holder: Coral Gausmann, BamBam and I have been covering the remainder.

Until very recently, I was an employee of Linden Lab, and paid the employee discount rate on regions: $150/month. However, as of June I no longer work there, and this July, the region reverted to normal pricing: $295/month.

We need your help. The monthly cost of the Go Center can be secured if we can fill 8 “shares”. Coral continues to have a share, and BamBam and I will each cover one. We need a few of generous players to step up. Please see the Land page for details.

Manage-ment

The Go Center also needs some help with management. In the past I’ve done all the notices and coordination of Go events. The problem is that when I’ve taken a break from the Go Center, the Go Center suffers. The last six months or so have been stressful for me at work, and I haven’t had the energy for the Go Center.

We need a core group of three to five individuals to form a leadership and management council to ensure that the Go Center continues strong. Please consider if you’d have the time and effort to help.

Discuss

Lastly, the Go Center belongs to all of us. I would love to hear your ideas about it’s future. Over at GoDiscussions.com we have a discussion forum, please contribute to the discussion there.
