Notarizing Signatures
Gather everyone who is to sign in the "Sign & Notarize" area of the notary. Make sure no one else is using the notary and that the desk is ready. The star icon on the desk's status panel should be green.
- Drop the document to be signed on the desk.
- Each avatar touches the desk to sign the document.
- Re-read the document it gives you.
- Answer the dialog to sign the document.
- After everyone has signed the document, say 'done'.
- Pay the desk the indicated fee (can be split; see below).
- The notary desk will notarize the signatures.
- Each AV takes a copy of the receipt that appears.
- Say 'done'.
Notes:
The notary desk has a large status panel with icons and brief instructions. Pay attention to the things the desk says.
If the desk isn't ready, and no one seems to be using the notary, they probably left before finishing a notarization. You can say 'cancel' to reset the notary desk.
To drop the document to be signed on the desk, drag the notecard from your inventory onto the desk.
When signing the document, be sure to re-read the version it gives you, as it is the version you are signing. You can keep or discard it after you are done reading.
Only answer the signing dialog if you really want to sign the document.
DO NOT SIGN if you aren't sure you agree to the document. Click 'Ignore' to remove the dialog and not complete the signature.
If you click anything other than 'Ignore' in the signing dialog, you are finalizing your signature. Once clicked, you have signed before the notary and your signature cannot be revoked or refuted!
You can share the payments, each avatar paying the desk part of the fee, or one avatar can pay the whole amount.
Notarizing the signatures involves contacting an out-of-world agent. This process could take up to three minutes.
The notary receipt that appears contains the certificate of acknowledgment, the notary signature, and a copy of the document. This receipt is proof that the avatars really did sign the document. You can make copies of this receipt and you can use the receipt at the verify desk to verify the signatures. You can freely give copies of the receipt object to those to whom you need to demonstrate the signatures.
Canceling a Notarization
Before payment is complete, you can cancel by saying 'cancel'. If you pause for more than two minutes at any step before complete payment, the notary will automatically cancel the transaction. Of course, if you have made a partial payment, it will be refunded.
Verifying a Receipt
Clicking on your receipt will give you several options and enable you to review the document, the signatures, and the notarization details. It will also ensure that the document it contains hasn't been altered.
To verify that the receipt is a valid notarization:
Go to the "Verify Receipts" area at Nota Bene. Make sure no one else is using the Verify desk, and that the desk is in the ready state. The star icon on the status panel should be green.
Drag your receipt from your inventory onto the verify desk. This will rez the receipt on top of the desk.
Immediately, the desk and the receipt should begin verification. The process can take up to three minutes.
When complete, the status panel on the desk shows the result. The verify desk will speak the details of the verification. When in doubt, always trust the verify desk's speech and status panel over the receipt object itself.
